Having gained junior experience at Everton and Crewe Alexandra, Jonathan was given a Y.T. at Blackpool and progressed into their youth and reserve sides. He joined Leigh as a right back but throughout the season he became an established centre midfielder.

He joined Leigh Genesis on loan in October 2007, being signed on contract in January 2008, then going on to achieve the status of both "Player's Player of the Year" and "Manager's Player of the Year" in the same season.
