Witton Albion 1-3 Leigh Genesis
Genesis come out on top.
SAT 25 OCT 2008
Leigh Genesis took all 3 points from a wet Wincham Park on Saturday as Steve Bleasdale's side underlined his sides battling qualities.
Witton put out a side featuring 5 former Leigh players but none of them really threatened Genesis goalkeeper Steve Dickinson. During the first half, chances were limited with both sides struggling to adapt to the conditions. Jordan Stepien had a shot saved early in the first half. Lee Thompson was leading the line for the Albion but his goals have dried up recently.
Leigh's Tom Field had a good first half controlling things in midfield while playing alongside captain for the day Chris Holland who experience provided the side with confidence in Jerome Fitzgerald's absence.
Early in the second half Matthew Berkeley was replaced by youngster Chris McCaughtrie who has recently broken into the Genesis first team. Leigh took the lead on 52 minutes when Field's pass cut open the Witton defence and Stepien struck home his 5th goal of the season. The lead lasted less then two minutes as former Huddersfield Town striker Rob Thornley headed his side level.
The game had now burst into life and it was Leigh who looked more lively up front. The visitors regained the lead on 58 minutes when Mark Smyth's effort was spilled in the damp conditions by Witton keeper Greg Smith, allowing Brad Maylett to pounce and hit his side in front.
The scoring was rounded off with 8 minutes remaining as Tom Field's goalbound effort looked to have been saved by Albion's keeper but somehow was fumbled and ended up in the back of the net. Field was awarded the goal.
Leigh are now placed in 9th going into the midweek round of fixtures and another win on Tuesday will see our side rise to 7th in the Unibond Premier League.
