Water torture for Genesis

Leigh Genesis travelled to Cammell Laird looking to extend the clubs unbeaten run to 3 games. The evening was a damp one with surface water on the pitch for most of the game. The referee was happy for the game to go ahead after a late pitch inspection.

Genesis striker Jordan Stepien had many of clubs chances with his going close to opening the scoring early on. With 18 minutes on the clock the 19 year old put his team mate Mark Smyth through and from 3 yards out, put the visitors in front. Stepien eventually the games opening goal.

On 24 minutes Lairds drew level as a shot from Mike Rimmer deflected past Steve Dickinson and in the slippy conditions, the ball trickled over the line. Before half time the home side were reduced to 10 men as centre half Lee Atherton was sent off for a foul on the edge of the penalty area on Mark Smyth. Brad Maylett almost put Genesis in front with a powerful header being forced away for a corner after a great save by the Lairds keeper Al' Samarie.

With the scores level at half time, conditions began to die down as the teams come out for the second half. The introduction of Paul Booth, Jerome Watt and Tom Field during the second period did spark life into the Genesis team but wasn't enough when Lairds took a surprising lead.

A corner was put into the 18 yard box and John Collins leapt highest the head home the winning goal. After that leigh pressed for a late goal but unfortunately never came.

Genesis take a break from the league in the clubs next fixture as they travel to Harrogate Railway in the FA Trophy on Saturday. Kick off is at 3:00pm and the Supporters Association are running a bus. For more information please visit www.lg-sa.co.uk
