Salford City 0 - 2 Leigh Genesis
Final friendly win for Genesis
WED 06 AUG 2008
With the short trip down the East Lancashire Road representing Leigh's final chance to experiment before the real business of the UniBond Premier League begins with a tough trip to Eastwood Town on Saturday August 16th, Genesis manager Steve Bleasdale fielded a somewhat unusual side with players asked to fulfill roles that may be slightly different to what they'd be used to.
After losing 2-1 at Trafford on Saturday, only Leigh's second defeat of the summer, the travelling Genesis support were looking for a positive response, although it certainly wasn't going to be an easy game against a Salford side that had a clear emphasis on passing the ball wherever possible, with the hosts putting together several good passages of play, although they only occasionally threatened Tim Dittmer's goal.
Genesis took the lead halfway through the first half when Mark Smyth was fouled on the edge of the penalty area, dusting himself off to send a delightful left-footed free kick in to the net in a fashion that he has threatened for the past couple of friendlies.
Although Tim Dittmer was called in to action to make a terrific save to tip a shot over the bar, it was largely one way traffic and Leigh doubled their lead shortly before the break when Brad Maylett broke strongly on the right flank, crossing for Smyth to head his second of the evening at the near post.
The second half saw a multitude of changes with the likes of Danny Penswick and Reece Kelly getting a run out, while Andy Heald enjoyed an impressive return to the side during the second period.
